 On the 26th December 1944 a B-24 bomber nicknamed 'Butch' assigned to the 485th Bomb Group,  set off on a bombing raid over the Blechhammer oil refinery.

After the bomb drop the aircraft turned and was hit by flack from the Reigersfeld Ack Ack Battery.  The aircraft broke in two and crashed at the South end of the factory complex close to the POW camp E711.

The crew were listed as MIA.  Being so close to the evacuation of the camps on January 21/22nd  burial details were not properly recorded.
