Christopher Wilson. 1509645. 5 Battery. 2nd Searchlight Reg. Royal Artillery. POW 3366.
The Regiment left Southampton on the 1st January 1940 on board SS Duke of York arriving at Cherbourg the next day. The Regiment then deployed to various locations, 5 Battery were stationed at Cap gris Nez. On a clear day the white cliffs of Dover could be seen from the Cap. Up until May, the men had little more to do than lighting up the occasional French plane heading in their direction from the mole. One plane not showing the correct identification lights was lit up and fired on.
On the 5th May 1940 Christopher was granted 10 days leave back home and paid £2.10s as his pay book shows. Returning after his leave to Cap gris Nez, the phoney war had ended, the German Blitzkreig had begun. The last entry before capture, He was paid 100 Francs on the 18th may.
On the 25th May, 5 battery's position at Cap gris Nez was overrun and they were all captured. Below, the Regimental war diary records that all of 5 Battery are missing.
What remained of the Regiment managed to reach Dunkirk, boarding two ships 'Canterbury' and 'Maid of Orleans' they made it back to England in the early hours of the next day.
